Starting next year across the country, rape victims too afraid or too ashamed to go to police can undergo an emergency-room forensic rape exam, and the evidence gathered will be kept on file in a sealed envelope in case they decide to press charges.
The new federal requirement that states pay for "Jane Doe rape kits" is aimed at removing one of the biggest obstacles to prosecuting rape cases: Some women are so traumatized they don't come forward until it is too late to collect hair, semen or other samples.
Here is the whole article:
http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5i3sH L9tK9gLLO7Z4r6P4csSPjirAD90KU7180
I am cheered by this news, which I hope means that more rapists end up getting prosecuted and punished. The process is still going to be hard on the women who press charges, but I hope this makes it a little better. More options are good. More time to think is good.
The article says a rape kit costs 800 US dollars. Why do some slides and swabs cost so much, I wonder? Are they figuring in the cost of the lab work to process the samples? The salary of the specially-trained nurse? Hmm.
Edit for typo: A rape kit actually costs 800 US dollars, not 80.
Edit #2, for clarification: $800.00 is the cost to the state, not the victim. Before this, only a few states would spring for the cost of a "Jane Doe" rape kit; most would only pay if the victim was reporting the rape to the police immediately. Now the states are required to pay for both kinds of kits.

In his General Audience of November 14, 1979 Pope John Paul II gives his second of three discourses within his greater Theology of the Body on the meaning of original unity. He expounds on what it means for the “definitive” creation of man to consist in the unity of two beings. The unity denotes, above all, the identity of human nature. The duality, however, demonstrates what, on the basis of this identity, constitutes the masculinity and femininity of created man. The unity and duality of man has both an ontological and axiological dimension, for they constitute what it means to be human, and also set forth man’s value as man before God (“God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good” (Gen 1:31). This unity and duality of man also sets forth a particular value for man himself: “first, because he is ‘man’; second, because the ‘woman’ is for the man and, vice versa, the ‘man’ is for the woman.” While this reality is expressed in purely theological terms in Genesis 1, Genesis 2 reveals this axiological dimension of the unity and duality of man through man’s own experience, first through the experience of original solitude, and then through the experience of man beholding woman for the first time. In few words the text of Genesis 2:23 can be considered a biblical prototype for the Song of Songs. While the text is concise, the Holy Father concludes that “one could even venture to say that the depth and power of this first and ‘original’ emotion of the man before the humanity of the woman, and at the same time before the femininity of the other human being, seems something unique and unrepeatable.”

As highlighted by
dakegra, the superbly good B-52s have recently released a new album...

Is it any good?, I hear you ask. Hell, yeah! What else would you expect from a band as good as this? Brilliantly catchy and fun like just about everything they've done. Still they keep going - Kate Pierson is old enough for a free bus pass these days!
They're playing in London on July 24th. Anyone fancy coming?

My old man kicked me out of his house. He was drunk, engaged in me in some open, honest conversation that we so sorely need(ed), and upon hearing a fraction of my "politics" (of which he's been aware for a while), told me to finish my dinner, pack my bags, and get the fuck out. He did give me $1,000 as I was loading the last of my shit from the house into my Jeep. Rather, he had my stepmom write the check. I've still got a bunch of shit in his garage to move... somewhere. I still have a disability claim that I'm working on. I still want to start school in the fall semester.
Of course, this means that he won't be helping
pyracies and I get a trailer. He backed out of our arrangement, violated our verbal contract, and kind of fucked me in the process. At least I know where he and I stand, though. I was hoping we'd develop a decent relationship out of the situation, but I guess knowing where we stand for sure will have to suffice.
So, in light of the whole being homeless thing, I obviously won't have steady internet. If you want to get ahold of me, email
pyracies at damseling [at] gmail [dot] com, or call me at 675-0591.

A few interesting and controversial headlines have popped up in the news and the gay blogosphere that raise some important questions. At what point is gay activism intruding upon free speech and freedom of expression rights? Freedom of speech and expression must be protected even for anti-gay forces, because if we don't have these basic freedoms it becomes a slippery slope and eventually we will not have the right to express our opinions.
I write this in light of some stories recently, such as a student who wore a t-shirt to school saying "Be Happy - Not Gay!" at a diversity event, who got in trouble. The courts have since ruled she is entitled to wear the shirt.
What about Crystal Dixon's case with the University of Toledo V.P. of Human Resources who outside the university wrote an opinion column denouncing homosexuality, claiming it is a choice. She has been fired under grounds that she mentioned she was a worker at the school and is now suing the school.
Finally there was the case at Smith College, where the College Republicans brought in Ryan Sorba who created a book called "The Born Gay Hoax" who spoke about bogus research regarding LGBT people. Students interrupted his anti-gay speech by screaming "We're Here, We're Queer, get used to it" the student protesters overwhelmed the room forcing Mr. Sorba to leave the campus and cancel his speech.
Youtube clip of the Smith protest:
What do you think about GLBT activism and where do we draw the line to ensure free speech rights, or is it okay to intrude upon the free speech of others when they seek to intrude on our civil liberties and spread falsehoods about our community?

I get the feeling that there's a lot of feelings of doom and gloom around at the moment. The news seems to be endlessly miserable, and the papers shout depressing things at us from the headlines, especially the more right-wing ones like the Mail and the Express. It's interesting that the right-wingers in this country seem determined to perpetuate the "this country's gone to the dogs" theory at every available opportunity.
Anyway, I'm generally quite an optimistic person, and despite the threatened onset of ECONOMIC CHROS and the less satisfactory elements of my life at the moment, I'm not too bothered by what's going on. However, I do feel overcome by a weary sense of deja-vu.
This all sounds a bit familiar, when you think about it...
The only bit I'm unsure of here, in Gordon Brown emulating John Major to a stunning degree, is what will happen at the next election. Will it be a 1992, where Gordon Brown miraculously and against all odds scrapes a tiny majority together and limps on for another five miserable years? Or will it be 1997 all over again, with a massive Tory victory that shoves Labour back into their post-1979 wilderness?
All that said, before you all go slashing your wrists, life isn't bad for most people in this country, and going back to the misery of the right-wing press, I'm glad that the Mail and Express do so much to encourage emigration. A lot of the miserable old farts that read these papers end up emigrating to Spain, to roast under the sun and go on about how glad they are that they don't live in Britain any more, which has gone to the dogs because of all the dirty foreigners who won't integrate into the "British Way of Life", whatever that means. The fewer of these twats in Britain, the better - it's why I've never found cheap package holidays to Spain even remotely appealing.
Of course, the right to settle in whatever European country you like is fine for the English...who see no irony in locking themselves away in English-speaking Mail-reading ghettos, whilst whining about how immigrants to Britain fail to integrate.
There may be trouble ahead...but ultimately, almost all of us know where our next meal is coming from, and that's more than can be said for a lot of people. I hope that, in the midst of all the crap, I never let it drag me down too much. Life is as good as you make it a lot of the time, and there's lots of ways to make it fucking fantastic that don't have to cost very much or be particularly difficult.

- Powerful, long-serving Prime Minister gets pretty unpopular and steps down.
- No particularly good replacements for said PM exist, and so the ex-Chancellor ends up getting the job.
- Just as all this happens, an economic crisis rears its ugly head.
- However good (or not) they may have been at being Chancellor, they end up being shit at being PM.
- Party unity and discipline imposed by previous strong PM falls apart under ineffectual leadership, and government becomes seriously useless.
- PM limps on for a bit, but ultimately heads towards crushing electoral defeat that keeps his party out of government for years.

I didn't see anything else about this, going back through recent posts, so I thought I would pop something up. It seems like something some of you might be interested in.
Oxfam are calling for knitters/crocheters to make squares for a giant baby blanket to be presented at Downing Street in September. Every square will represent a mother who has not survived her pregnancy because she could not get access to adequate medical care. They need 250,000 squares.
Anyway, if you are interested in helping out, or you know of any knitters or crocheters who would like to lend a hand, all the details you need are on these two sites.

This is a post in an atheist forum. It shows a creative anti-porn video made by an unknown Christian source and comments from atheists about it. It is all very intersting.
Have a look:

BTW, I know there are many atheists against porn... but those in that forum are not.

I'm sorry if you've already seen this and apologies for cross-posting everywhere but I really wanted to spread the word about this petition. It can only be signed by UK citizens. It is against the tattooing of animals for aesthetic purposes. Not only does that cause pain to the animal without any just cause but it can also lead to further complications such as infections and severe allergic reaction. This is completely cruel and unnecessary and I hope some people will sign.
Here is the petition:

I'm sorry if this is inappropriate, though I checked the user info of all the communities I posted to. Please delete if so.

OK, I know my chances in the LJ Advisory Board elections aren't brilliant, but I want to give this a damn good try, and I want to do it properly. There's a lot of candidates standing who either have personal agendas, or won't take the role seriously, and I want to come across as someone who can and will do the best job possible of representing everyone.
All my election-related posts are tagged and can be found here, so for anyone who wants to know what I'm about, this is somewhere you can point them. Sometime soon, probably tomorrow, I'll set out some more of my thoughts in the hope of getting some good debate going.
If you want to point people towards me as a candidate they might want to consider, please give them the link above. I'd really appreciate a banner pointing to that link, so can anyone make me one?
A lot of people have got their required quota of support by spamming communities, or by being popular in fanfic groups etc. I want to get somewhere simply on merit, so I'm not going to spam anything at all, and would like to just allow what I'm writing to speak for itself. Pimp me about like you have been doing so far, and let's see what people make of me. I'd like this just to be a viral campaign, really - I'll leave people to read things for themselves, and decide whether to spread the word or not. Besides, I'm away from home during part of the election period and will have rather limited internet access.
You've been great in helping me get this far without really having to do very much besides comment as best I can on what I think of everything. I really want to do this job, so let's tell everyone how great I would be at it. :)

Yesterday, my LJ friend Haley -
beyondbabylon - posted a really thought-provoking and intelligent sermon she had preached on mothers' day. It was about the motherhood of Godde: but more than that, it was about seeking various metaphors for Godde, because Godde is so deep and has so many layers and characteristics that we may constantly find new metaphors to try to express her nature and aspects of who she is.
As some of you know, if you follow my blogs, I have been studying "She Who Is" by Elizabeth Johnson, which is also about considering new and evolving language and metaphor for how we perceive everything of who Godde is.
And Haley's sermon is, I think, so impressive and so helpful (and I'd add, so much needed in our churches and societies today) that I'm posting the whole of it here, with her permission, behind an lj-cut.
So here is Haley's sermon on the metaphor of motherhood and other ways of approaching and opening our hearts to Godde:( Read on... )
I think this sermon is so full of precious insight. Thank you Haley.

Polish Holocaust hero dies at 98.
With 9000 dead from an earthquake in China today and tens of thousands dead in Myanmar - whose government could have saved many of them but didn't - it's important to me to see and remember people like this. When you see just how little it takes for nine or ten thousand people to disappear from the earth it's good to remember who have fought hard to save lives and succeeded.

My final grades are in. I really wanted this to happen but I thought I messed up, but I got my 4.0. That gave me straight A's for both semesters (even though the first semester was a limited course load). I'm very excited. My last spring semester was a total disaster, mostly because I had no idea how sick I was and just missed way too much class. So it was really nice after everything that has happened in the past year to bounce back with two consecutive 4.0's.
Anyway, that's all, I'm excited. My computer usage is limited for the next month, so I'll only be on in spurts (though I hope to do a couple posts today). Hope everyone is well.
Peace,
Michael

What do you think of Suicide Girls?
I just took a look at the Facebook page (linked from a friend's profile) and all the comments to the photos are along the lines of 'sexy', 'hot', 'i would love her to be my girlfriend'. Comments that wouldn't seem out of place on a similar fan page of FHM Magazine.
The idea is that these women embody what we don't see in the media - tattooed and pierced girls, rock chicks, goths, etc. The website says:
We are an army of 1,781 unconventionally gorgeous pin-up girls devoted to changing your idea of what makes women beautiful.
But isn't this just furthering the objectification of women? Is this really empowerment? And are these images really all that subversive?
I am undecided. Positive things to note include the fact that in most images the girl is looking at the camera, looking happy or coy, in contrast to many advertising images in which women either don't make eye contact with the camera or their face isn't even shown at all while their body language makes them appear passive and vulnerable. In addition, a lot of the content on SuicideGirls is user uploaded and updated, so the girls decide how to represent themselves. Negatives? Correct me if I'm wrong (I admit to only skimming the website), but most of these girls fit conventional standards of what makes a body beautiful - they don't have any 'excess' fat, they are mostly white, they are mostly hairless. And, perhaps more importantly, these are still images of women as sexual objects, first and foremost. Is there a SuicideBoys? Would a SuicideBoys site have the same appeal?
Apologies if this has been brought up before, I would just be interested to hear people's opinions and experiences.

Big success!
I have the required support, and I'm through to the next stage - I just got the nomination confirmation. :)
Huge thanks to everyone who has supported me. Winning the popularity contest with fandom bigwigs is probably going to be nigh-on impossible, but I'll give it a damn good try.

In honor of Mother's Day, my partner and I have been working on a multimedia project. I'm hoping that it can really grow and expand, and that lots of people will participate. Here are the basics:
While I was out for a run recently, I saw a new ad for Canadian Club Whisky. The campaign is called "Damn Right Your Dad Drank It," and features photos of white men doing manly things circa the Seventies. There are several of these ads. One reads "Your Dad Wasn't A Metrosexual," another reads "Your Mom Wasn't Your Dad's First." The one that really annoyed me was "Your Dad Had Groupies."
( Here are the ads, click on the thumbnails to enlarge: )
I find this campaign offensive on so many levels. First of all, if Canadian Club is attempting to change their image to increase sales, I find it odd that they are being so exclusionary with their re-branding. Apparently, the only people invited to the Canadian Club Club are White Males, Ages 18-30, women and people of color need not apply. It's not that surprising to me that a company is aiming at that small demographic, but the way they're doing it is truly offensive. Basically, they are appealing to men who miss the days (whether or not they were born yet) of grabbing the asses of their secretaries, playing a few rounds at the all-white private golf club, and then going home to their wives, the happy homemakers who would mix them drinks, cook them dinner, and wait on them hand and foot. None of this women's lib, civil rights, limp-wristed liberal bullshit that men are expected to follow these days. No, let's go back to the days of rampant sexual harassment, before women could expect to be seen as equals and before the gays turned all those masculine men into pansies with waxed eyebrows. Let's return to the days when men were men. Please.
Adding insult to injury, visitors to the site are invited to "Put your own dad (or yourself or your friends) into one of our Damn Right ads. It's downright easy to do, and when you're done you can download your ad and send it to your friends." This Ad Maker is where I got the idea for the following project: I was going to remake the ads, but with women. Women who were old enough to be my mom or my grandmother, and with tag lines like "Your Mom Didn't Shave Her Legs" or "Your Grandma Built Fighter Jets." The first one I made was "Your Mom Had Groupies." I included a selection of female musicians that I love, some that were well known, others that were not.
